Delaware State University Names Early Childhood Innovation Center in Honor of Senator Thomas R. Carper

DOVER, Del. (June 15, 2026), Delaware State University officially dedicated the Senator Thomas R. Carper Early Childhood Innovation Center on Monday, honoring Senator Thomas R. Carper’s nearly five decades of public service and his longstanding commitment to education, workforce development, and opportunity for Delaware families.
The building naming ceremony brought together state and university leaders, elected officials, educators, community partners, and supporters to celebrate the remarkable career and lasting impact of Senator Carper, whose public service spans roles as Delaware State Treasurer, Governor of Delaware, U.S. Representative, and U.S. Senator.
The newly named center recognizes Senator Carper’s enduring support for educational advancement, workforce readiness, and investments that have strengthened opportunities for generations of Delawareans. It also reflects the mission of the Early Childhood Innovation Center, which works to strengthen Delaware’s early childhood education workforce through scholarships, professional development, career advising, and educational pathways.

The ceremony featured remarks from several distinguished leaders who reflected on Senator Carper’s contributions to Delaware and his unwavering belief in the power of education.
Governor Matt Meyer spoke about Senator Carper’s lasting influence on Delaware and his commitment to creating opportunities that strengthen communities and improve lives across the state.
U.S. Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester highlighted Senator Carper’s decades of leadership and public service, sharing reflections on his dedication to Delaware families and his efforts to ensure that future generations have access to educational and economic opportunities.
Dr. Tony Allen, President of Delaware State University, reflected on Senator Carper’s relationship with the University and his support for the institution’s growth and success. Dr. Allen noted that Senator Carper played a significant role in the University’s history when, as Governor, he signed legislation in 1993 changing Delaware State College to Delaware State University.
“This institution’s story is stronger because of Senator Carper’s belief in its potential and its mission,” Dr. Allen shared.
Leroy Tice, Chairman of the Delaware State University Board of Trustees, emphasized the significance of naming a building after a leader whose service and vision helped shape Delaware’s educational landscape.
